Scarlet Tong is a PhD student at HKU’s Department of Urban Planning and Design. She explores the connection between language and spatial cognition. Language is chosen as a medium for revealing mental processes related to spatial cognition such as navigation, wayfinding, route learning, and memory. Her work will focus on using Hong Kong as the case study city, captializing on its unique complex volumetric urban landscape.

She received her M.S. in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia GSAPP and Bachelors of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University. Exposure to media design and human-computer interactions field help Scarlet develop an interdisciplinary approach to study spatial cognition.

Growing up in Macao, China - where both Chinese and Portuguese cultures are celebrated, has stemmed Scarlet’s interest in the negotiations (and tensions) between the new and old urban fabric of a city. She has experience in interacting with clients and end users, or collaborating with others outside the field. Feel free to check her resume here, and request her design portfolio if interested.
