Environmental Charter School

Can a school be a key community resource to germinate positive change within the neighborhood?

[48-305] Advance Construction Studio | Spring 2018

A semester long project interrogating the possibilities of creating a middle school building that promotes both environmental and social sustainability in Carrick, Pittsburgh PA. Carrick currently faces issues with fresh food access and has a negative connotation among other neighborhoods in Pittsburgh because of its constant battle against opioid. The proposed school is seen as a possible community center for its proximal location from the main business district and adjacent to Phillips Park available for large gatherings and activities. The studio places emphasis on exterior wall detailing and developing an overall structural system for the building by integrating sustainability and structural methodologies into the design of the school.
